Last year Kabul Fire Records kicked off their Nowroz themed release series celebrating the persianate new years on the beginning of spring. While Nowroz 1401 featured 3 tracks by Farhot in partial collaboration with other contemporary Afghan artists from the diaspora - this years release follows a stripped down approach in order to highlight one artist, one sound. Therefore Nowroz 1402 - as we’re counting along the persianate sun calendar - only features Afghan rapper Khan, who lent his flow and poetry in service of preserving and creating newer Afghan culture, while any cultural life is still at hold in Afghanistan under the current Taliban regime.

Even though Khan’s „Nowroz 1402“ is a release to a celebratory occasion, his rap carries the heavy weight of the Afghan experience marked by displacement. He recalls the streets of Kabul, the friends he left behind, the neighbors daughter he had a crush on -all while offering social commentary on the emotional burden life in Kabul posed for them - navigating between suicide bombings and empty prayers circulating on tv after energy drink commercials. In that sense „Nowroz 1402“ can be labelled as what we call „conscious rap“. A look into the english translation might only offer a glimpse into the depth of Khan’s thoughts, but paired with the sound of his flow we can link him to hiphop tradition heavily influenced by the likes of Nas or Earl Sweatshirt. Either way Khan ends on a hopeful note, imagining the day where he’ll be able to celebrate Nowroz with his loved ones under more lighthearted circumstances.
